Catan Stories: The Legend of the Sea Robbers from developer LUCKYHAMMERS and published by Asmodee Digital, is a new mobile game set in the world of the classic board game Catan. A text based story game, Catan Stories is not what you may be expecting. More like a “Choose Your Own Adventure” book from your childhood, the game puts players in text based conversations with various heroes, players then choose the response they want, changing the course of the story.
Catan Stories puts players in the role of a raven, the guardian of the island of Catan. The story is set 70 years after the first settlers arrived, its residents enjoying a peaceful existence. After seeing a dark vision of the future destruction of Catan, the raven sets out to find heroes who will join him in keeping this future from ever occurring. Made in close collaboration with the creators of Catan, Klaus and Benjamin Teuber, Catan Stories gives players a never before seen story set in the world of Catan.
Not entirely text based, Catan Stories some interesting artwork and graphics for the visions the raven has and also the map of the island. Otherwise, it is essentially like reading an interactive book. A very well written one at that. At times Catan Stories will force you take a break in the story, later alerting you it is time to continue. This was my only issue with the game. I felt like this forced me to not just take a break but sometimes lose a bit of interest. I personally enjoy devouring anything I read, or play for that matter. Thankfully just this week a new patch added a fast forward mode, just too late for my initial playthrough sadly.
Catan Stories may not be for everyone, including fans of the board game. It does hold its own though, even without the Catan licence use it would’ve been an enjoyable story. I generally would spend as much time as the game would allow me progressing the story along, and was impressed with some of the twists and turns the tale takes. Catan Stories actually got me interested in more story based games like it. I hope more game makers and writers will jump into this format, its really interesting. At an MSRP of $1.99 there is no big expense to try Catan Stories: Legend of the Sea Robbers. Give it a shot, you may be very pleased.
